In the academic understanding of Piaff, the excercise itsself is not a goal, but a tool. In the literature, the old masters before Gueriniere do not even have a name for the excercise, though without doubt they have been working with it. After we have already teached the horse suppleness, bending and stellning as well as taking the hindlegs forward underneath the point of weight, we will start to work with bending the haunches. The ability of bending the haunches in movement will lead us to piaff, bringing the horse to a very calm and supple balance with a liftet chest. In this video, Bent Branderup is explaining that piaff only has a sense in the education of a horse if we have a clean transition of energy in all the angles, and if the basic gates and the transitions in and out of the basic gates are developing and getting better. Remember: In the Academic art of Riding, each excercise is seen as a tool and is supposed to develope the basic gates and the abilities of the horse. We made an update in 2017.
